Chewing is not the first stage of digestion

There are several steps to the digestive process and all have a purpose.  I wanted to share something with you today that I think is awesome.

Chewing is most often referred to as the first stage of digestion.  I even say that sometimes when my talk is a little more simplified.  If we look as digestion there are several steps and I’ll put them in order here:

  • Chewing and saliva
  • Stomach acids and enzymes
  • Small Intestine absorption
  • Large Intestine bacteria and more absorption
  • Elimination

I’m going to share with you some things that happen before chewing that make a big deal in the digestive process.

Selection and Anticipation

The food we choose to eat would be the first part of digestion.  What we choose determines much of the process.  Most digestive issues are fixed by selections of different foods.  Indigestion, bloating, gas, heart burn, constipation, and Diarrhea are all signs you may not be selecting correctly for your body.  We’ve talked about this before and certainly this idea is covered more in my book.

For today I’m more excited to talk about anticipation!

Does that mean I’m anticipating the talk about anticipation?  Whoa!  :o)

This topic blows me away.  Did you know if we think about a certain food our bodies begin to get ready for it?  If you think of something sweet the digestive system begins prepping even if we haven’t seen the food yet!  Certainly more once we have.

Don’t believe me?  Think about biting into a lemon and the pulp squishes between your teeth and your cheeks start to pucker.  I don’t know about you but just typing that made my mouth water in preparation for all that sour.

Cool Huh?

Well other foods may not make a reaction that mouth wateringly awesome but they still get ready.  If you are thinking about sweets your body will start to prep for more sugar.  If the sugar doesn’t come and the preparations have been made then your cravings will ramp up so you can use the prep that has already been done.  So, thoughts can increase hunger!

To me, this is the biggest reason that you would watch out for sweet food scented candles, walking past a bakery, food network, and other reminders of food.  The cookies on the counter really don’t help the situation.

There’s more that we could share about this but I think that leaves you with a fun little idea.  Our bodies are so amazing aren’t they?  Let’s make sure we use these ideas to enhance our health and happiness.

Happy Digesting.
