Why I don’t drink alcohol

Before I even get into it I want you to know I am not against other people drinking alcohol and I think it’s highly likely that Jesus drank alcohol when he was on earth. I’ve just gone through certain life experiences that have led me not to drink.  I’m not saying you have to follow, but I do want to share my reasoning because some of it relates to health and fitness.

I love lists and bullet points when I’m reading so I supply you skimmers with bullet points to keep you going.

- Both my Grandfathers were alcoholics.  I did not know either of them real well.  Both died too young (one before I was born).

- I put myself in the hospital one time drinking too much (college).

- The flabbiest I ever got was when I was drinking alcohol the most.  Avoiding alcohol is AWESOME for my ABS!

- There is some research that says it’s good for heart health but several others that say it's no good for other diseases like Cancer.  I wonder if Tea has the same heart health benefit because it also creates a sit down and relax time.

- I want my daughter to never see me drink.  Seeing my parents occasionally drink made me feel like I couldn’t wait to get this amazing adult freedom.  I wanted to grow up, so I did it earlier and excessively.

- I am a role model for our fitness clients whether I like it or not.  I try to take that responsibility seriously.

- Zig Ziglar was a big hero of mine and learning about his commitment not to drink strengthened my commitment.  Being that kind of man would be AWESOME!

- I have an obsessive and addictive personality.  I have to be very careful with that.  I could easily be taken out by alcohol.

- Proverbs talks about being wise and avoiding strong drinks.  (Maybe he means vodka and tequila, but I’ll just put beer and wine in there too (for myself))

- I used to get the worst hangovers!  As I was backing off I found I would even get a light headache after only one drink.  (that helps quitting)

- My wife doesn’t drink so I don’t have any spousal pressure.  That makes it easier.

- I feel fitter, healthier, stronger, and more productive.  I like feeling that way so I avoid as many things as possible that make me feel otherwise.

I hope you do not feel any judgment from me if you drink.  I am perfectly fine with that as you have every right to do that just as I have every right NOT to do that.  I do see that sometimes the biggest obstacle in the way of health and weight loss for many of our clients is actually alcohol.  There is a way to have it and still be healthy and fit. It usually means it becomes more of a special occasion beverage where the special occasion is not completing another day of work :o)

I just wanted those of you who were interested in why I don’t drink, to have a better idea how I came to that decision.  If you need to know more details we'll have to meet up for a drink...of water :o)
