Life changing benefits

“I CAN do that!”

Ruthanne C.
Mother of Two

On an extremely hot summer day in August, my daughter wanted a snow cone. We jumped into the car and off we went to get the snow cone. With my son on my hip, I stepped up onto the first of two really high steps. It took every ounce of energy I had to get up on the step. My son was only six months old, so I knew it wasn’t his weight that was causing the problem.

Besides being extremely overweight, stress was a huge problem for me. There had to be a way to handle stress besides taking pills. That is when I decided that something had to change. A friend of mine had just started working out and was using a personal trainer. The first trainer I worked with was hard and she knew her stuff and I was getting great results. Wonderful things were starting to happen. Weight was starting to come off, my stress level was much lower and I was starting to regain some of my self confidence.

After working out for almost a year, I managed to talk Jeremy into training me. It was the best and hardest thing I’ve ever done. His workout was very different from any of the training sessions that I had before. For the longest time I would way “I can’t do that!” Eventually, I started saying “I can do that!” and I would have to fight through it but I could do it. Each training session was different. When the weather was nice or even hot, I could count on us being out in it. After each session, I was completely exhausted but in an empowering way. Jeremy pushes you to go beyond what you think you are capable of.

Training with a trainer is the best thing that I could have of done for myself. The biggest reward wasn’t that my body was in better shape, it was my stress level. Working out releases all of the anxiety and stress that I carry through the day. I’m a better Mom and wife when I can take care of myself too.

My mother warned me that someday my body would stop cooperating with my lifestyle. I just smiled and nodded (and rolled my eyes). I was pretty sure all that stuff about turning 40 wouldn't apply to me. To this day I am still at a loss as to when that extra 10 pounds attached itself to my rear end. I just tried to ignore the next 5 or 10 pounds, too. I thought I would just eat a little less... …occasionally.

The horrible truth became clear when I saw a picture of myself at age 45 weighing in at 160 pounds. In 5 years, I had gained 40 pounds. I hate it when my mom is right! The week following the emotional trauma of seeing "the picture", I joined a weight loss program. I learned some very important things from that program that I continue to use today, such as the value of water and that some foods are BAD for you (darn it!). I lost 36 pounds in 15 weeks and was very hungry. I gained 20 pounds back within the year.

During that year, one stressful event after another began happening in our family. I was desperate to find an outlet for my frustrations. I loved playing sports in the past and was reminded of how good it always made me feel. Although I had never been one to hang out at the gym, our health club was introducing group exercise classes. I tried BodyPump and RPM and I was hooked.

Although group exercise classes were great, I needed to work on specific areas as well. Since I was unfamiliar with the gym equipment, I didn't feel comfortable trying to use it on my own. That's when I got my “Nazi” personal trainer, Jeremy Biernat. Working hard and achieving goals was the focus my mind and body needed to get me through a very difficult time in my life. I never thought lifting weights or working out could be enjoyable. Jeremy dramatically changed my attitude about that. His unique style of getting crazy and having fun while exercising, made it something to look forward to doing. How on earth could he make working out with a medicine ball fun?! I still don’t understand it but I love it!

Jeremy mixed all types of activities like kicking and punching, yoga, lifting weights or maneuvering obstacle courses, to make each workout new and stimulating. I was always eager to see what he would come up with next. I can honestly say that Jeremy’s influence has changed my lifestyle in a very positive way.

Personal training provided the motivation I needed to be consistent in my exercise routine. Even though I loved the group exercise classes, I tended to slack off in coming unless I knew someone was waiting for me. And what is really ironic, if you know me, I loved letting the trainer be the boss (so to speak) allowing me to just zone out, work hard and sweat. It was like a new adventure every session. I got to do fun things I would never have thought of on my own. I have never felt better or stronger.

“I did not realize that exercising would bring me back to the strength, agility and energy that I had in my younger days.”

Jo Smith
Age 66

I have exercised on and off (mostly off) most of my adult life. Originally my main purpose was weight. It was not until later in my life that I realized that I was losing strength and agility and energy. I did not realize that exercising would bring me back to the strength, agility and energy that I had in my younger days.

I had a lot of back trouble in the past three years and I was not active at all. In May, 2005 when I had my annual physical I had gained 10 pounds in one year. I left the Doctor’s office and came straight over to Hendrick Health System and joined. I got a personal trainer to help me.

From that first day, my back starting getting better. I could not believe it! I didn’t mention it to anybody for about three weeks. Then I started realizing that the exercise and the stretching had given me relief from the pain I suffered all day and most of the nights. Just think about feeling like you used to when you were younger.

You do not need to be an exercise freak or run marathons; but you will become aware of your posture, your nutrition, your pace (you have been moving much too slowly) and you will gain strength in your legs.

I will give one example: I travel a lot. I notice that women have no strength. That is from lack of weight training. When ladies get on a Car Rental Shuttle; they have to put down their suitcase and briefcase to climb on. That is weakness in the legs. I was embarrassed and I have worked that out to where I don’t even have to think about stepping up or down; plus I can put the largest piece of carryon they will allow in an overhead without any problem at all.

We all need to keep our independence. We must exercise. We must watch what we eat. And we must be aware of posture and pace. I feel I am a very disciplined person in life, but I will not push myself enough to really accomplish my goals without a personal trainer at least two and the better than that three days a week. It is worth its weight in gold.

Change For The Better

I needed a change!  I was feeling tired; down hearted, my clothes didn’t fit the way they used to, I was irritable and it was reflecting on my family and my well-being.
Luckily, I found a personal trainer, Jeremy.  Around here that is something basically unheard of.  So, I decided I was going to give this a try.  This just might work and it has!   I didn’t have the drive or the determination to do it on my own.  I needed consistency.

At first I lost a few pounds and then gained a few back.  It was around the holidays and I wasn’t about to give up all they yummy home made goodies that I thought made me feel so good.  I’ve always been one of those “comfort food” eaters.  So, right after Christmas 2006, with Jeremy’s guidance, I began keeping a food journal, doing a little bit of cardiovascular exercise on a regular basis and personal training with him twice a week.  Since then I have lost 18 pounds, about two inches in my waist, and I’m actually starting to wear clothes I haven’t seen in months!

You think you are making healthy choices when it comes to food; however, you would be amazed at how much you are either overeating or eating food that really doesn’t have that much nutritional value.  No longer do I eat my kids’ leftovers or partake of food when I’m preparing it.  I’ve learned to appreciate special treats and I’m not hungry, in other words I’m not starving myself.   Fitting in 10 minutes or so of cardio several times during the week has made a huge difference.  It is not discouraging thinking that when you get on the treadmill you have to be there for a 1/2 hr or hr. at a time.   I am so much less stressed!   Jeremy creates personal training sessions for you, the individual.  Who would have thought your posture could tell so much about you?  It really does.  He works ”with” you to find the areas you need help with and helps you keep the proper form while you strengthen these areas, ultimately resulting in less injury.   You do not have to lift a lot of weight to get results.  Even when you think you can’t do something or don’t feel like working out he pushes just enough to hold you accountable to your goals and it is actually fun!

A Personal Trainer is not just for celebrities, it is for everyone, even around here.  In today’s high paced society, change is inevitable, so make a change for the better.  I did and I will never regret it.  My husband keeps telling me how good I look and how well I’m doing.   Accepting compliments can be difficult for me, the important thing is that I’m a happier person and my family is happier for it!   And there are a lot more clothes in my closet to choose from now.

Thank you!
